About Sisseton-Wahpeton College

Sisseton-Wahpeton College (SWC.TC) is a tribally-controlled institution of higher learning chartered by the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate in 1979. Located on the Lake Traverse Reservation in northeastern South Dakota, SWC.TC serves Native American students and the surrounding community with a commitment to academic excellence and cultural preservation.

As a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), we are one of 37 tribal colleges and universities in the United States dedicated to providing accessible, quality higher education while honoring indigenous knowledge, languages, and traditions.

Our History

Founded in 1979, Sisseton-Wahpeton College emerged from the community's vision to provide educational opportunities that respect and incorporate Dakota cultural values. For over four decades, we have been preparing students to become leaders, professionals, and stewards of their communities while maintaining strong connections to their cultural heritage.

Academic Programs

SWC.TC offers a range of associate degree and certificate programs designed to meet the educational and workforce needs of our students and community. Our curriculum integrates Dakota cultural perspectives with contemporary academic standards.

Liberal Arts

Associate of Arts degree providing a strong foundation in humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions or immediate career opportunities.

Program Length: 2 years

Business Administration

Comprehensive business education covering accounting, management, marketing, and entrepreneurship with emphasis on tribal economic development.

Program Length: 2 years

Dakota Studies

Focused study of Dakota language, history, culture, and traditions. Essential for cultural preservation and community leadership.

Environmental Science

Study of environmental systems, natural resource management, and sustainable practices relevant to tribal lands and communities.

Human Services

Preparation for careers in social work, counseling, and community services with culturally-responsive approaches.

Admission Requirements

Sisseton-Wahpeton College maintains an open admissions policy, welcoming all students who demonstrate the potential to benefit from post-secondary education. We serve tribal members, Native American students from all nations, and non-Native students.

How to Apply

  1. Complete Application: Submit a completed application form with personal information and educational background
  2. Transcripts: Provide official high school transcripts or GED certificate
  3. Placement Testing: Complete assessment tests to determine appropriate course placement
  4. Tribal Enrollment: If applicable, provide documentation of tribal enrollment or Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB)
  5. Financial Aid: Complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine eligibility for financial assistance

Fall Semester: Classes begin in late August

Spring Semester: Classes begin in mid-January

Summer Session: Classes begin in early June
