Dear SWC Student,

Everyone goes through times of great stress, especially while in college.  There are finances, childcare, transportation, projects, grades, deadlines and other issues to consider in one’s personal life that may arise each semester.  If you at anytime feel overwhelmed, stressed or depressed and need someone to talk to, SWC Student Support Services has caring staff to counsel or refer you.  During SWC office hours, you may contact, Jerry Schradick at 605) 698-3966 X 1305; Janice Seminole at 605) 698-3966 X 1302.  IHS has professional counselors at 605) 698-7606, Mental Health Department, ask for Linda or Debbie. Or, if you feel you need to talk urgently with someone off hours, please call National Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-8855 at any hour of the day or night.  We care!

Counseling

Student Services Personnel and Academic Advisors are available to assist students with a variety of concerns, including educational, personal, or social. Students may schedule appointments or "drop in" the Student Services office or with an advisor to discuss any concerns they may have. All information discussed is kept confidential.

New Student Orientation

Orientation for the new, former, and transfer students will be held 1-2 days prior to the first day of classes of each new semester or summer session. All new, transfer, and former students are required to attend. New Student Orientation features pre-registration advisement and assessment testing. It is designed to acquaint students with the programs, facilities, policies and procedures of the college.

SWC Bookstore and Giftshop

The SWC Bookstore is owned and operated by the college under policies authorized by the Board of Trustees. The purpose of the Bookstore is to provide for the sale of textbooks and supplies associated with the academic programs of the college. The SWC bookstore is located on the first floor of the main building near the front entrance.

Student Senate

The student senate is an organization of students established to give the student body of SWC a voice with which to express their concerns and opinions to the Administration and Board of Trustees. The Student Senate president sits on the SWC Board of Trustees and participates in their meetings. The Student Senate also organizes social and cultural activities in which the student body and the public participate. All students are encouraged to become a part of this organization.

The library provides students, staff, faculty, and the public with publications and audio-visual materials for study and recreational purposes. The library is computer automated with a Public Student Recruitment Access catalog. It subscribes to more than 160 periodicals and has a collection of more than 14,000 volumes in the general collection. The special Native American collection contains many volumes unique to the Dakota people. All the materials in the general collection have been selected to support classes, programs, and interests of the college and community. The library has computers for student use. The Internet is available for research with email accounts provided for each student. Other materials housed in the library include videos, cassette tapes, pamphlets and articles, indexes, college catalogs, telephone directories, children and youth publications, books on tape, typewriters, computers and audio-visual media equipment.

College Cafe

As a service to the students and staff of SWC, a cafe operates within the college building. The cafe offers a complete menu and daily specials for breakfast, lunch, and between class snacks. Meal plans are available for purchase in the Business Office.
